Platform Character Limits

Every platform has slightly different rules for usernames. Here's what you need to know before you commit to a handle:

• TikTok: 1–24 characters. Letters, numbers, underscores, and periods only. No spaces.
• Instagram:1–30 characters. Letters, numbers, underscores, and periods. Periods can't start or end the name.
• Discord:2–32 characters. Almost anything goes, including spaces and special characters. Case doesn't matter for uniqueness.
• Steam:display names are 2–32 characters and don't need to be unique. Your account name (used for login) is separate and permanent.
• Xbox: 1–15 characters. No consecutive spaces, no leading/trailing spaces, and certain words are blocked.
• PlayStation: 3–16 characters. Letters, numbers, hyphens, and underscores. You can change it, but the first change is free — after that, it costs money.

If you plan to use the same name everywhere, aim for 15 characters or fewer with only letters, numbers, and underscores. That combination works on every major platform.

How to Check If a Username Is Taken

This generator creates ideas, but it doesn't check live availability. Here are the fastest ways to verify a name before you settle on it:

• Direct search:go to the platform's signup or profile search page and type the name. Most platforms will immediately tell you if it's taken.
• URL trick:on Instagram, visit instagram.com/[username]. On TikTok, visit tiktok.com/@[username]. A "Page not found" result usually means the name is available.
• Backup plan: generate 10 ideas, pick your top 3, and check all three. If your first choice is taken, you already have alternatives ready.
